KYC: what to review before doing business
A counterparty review begins with a practical question: who is making the commitment, and what documents support it? A name and a commercial offer are a starting point, not a complete file.
Five points to organise the review
- Identity and company registration: use reliable, current sources.
- Authority to act: identify who signs and the scope of their powers.
- Ownership: understand the company structure and beneficial owners.
- Consistency: compare the offer with the activity and documents provided.
- Traceability: record sources, dates, unresolved questions and the decision.
A missing document is a reason to ask questions. It does not, by itself, establish fraud. The scope of the review should match the operation and its risks.
